On Dumpster Diving Question 1
The stigma that is prejudged onto the poor is that it's their fault that they are poor and that they are mindless people who eat random trash. Our author takes that stigma and shows us how there is an elegance to dumpster diving. He shows us how there are rules that should be followed while dumpster diving. Our author tells us ,”After all, the finding of objects is becoming somewhat of an urban art” (Eighner 713).This quote from the beginning of the article shows us that he sees dumpster diving as an art, meaning that there are different techniques to dumpster dive and also a set of rules that should be followed but can be ignored occasionally.
Our author also debunks the thought about how dumpster divers are ignorant people by telling us about the learning curve that occurs while dumpster diving. “I have no special knowledge and I have been wrong before”(Eighner 714). The quote is showing us how he had to figure this stuff out about dumpster diving. It shows that it isn't just an easy task that you can pick up quickly, you have to work at it to be able to safely dumpster dive. Our author throughout this article showed us time and time again that our stigma that is given to dumpster divers and homeless people is completely and utterly wrong.

What makes a good friend stay?
Sometimes friends come and go. Sometimes friends are here to stay. So, what makes a good friend stay? In Of Mice and Men we see George stay alongside of and take care of Lennie. Why? George obviously thinks on page 13 that, “When I think of a swell time I can have without you, I go nuts. I never get no peace.”(Steinbeck 13). George obviously wants to be on his own and wants to have a swell time as he puts it. Yet he stays. He stay because he is a good friend. Well what is a good friend? We all have gotten at one point frustrated with our friends. It’s normal. But that is what makes good friends. Even when times get tough and hostile between you they still always have your back, because that’s what friends are for. They have your back. That is what a good friend is, and that is why a good friends stay. Because they have your back no matter what.

Everything has a dark and a light side. That’s at least what we know from Claude McKay’s poem America. The dark side is presented within our authors poem with this quote,"Her vigor flows like tides into my blood, Giving me Strength erect against her hate,"(McKay). The strong diction within this line of text shows us the elaborate and the intensity of the poem. The word choice of hate helps expand on the idea of having a dark side to America. Evidently, everything also has a light side as expressed in this next line from the poem,"And see her might and granite wonders there, Beneath the touch of Time's unerring hand, Like priceless treasures sinking in the sand,"(McKay). The word choice for these lines by using might, unerring, and priceless show the light side for America. It's cheesy but everything has a dark side and a light side to it.

Blog On Voice-Text 2

Receptivity

The author is able to see right through her parent’s lie of being able to own a house that is very similar to the houses that they see on TV. When she is describing their new house on Mango Street her parents tell her it is only temporary and our author states, “But I know how those things go.” She is able to see her parents trying to reassure the kids that they will eventually get to their dream house that their parents have been describing to them. Our righter shows us their understanding of the situation and how her family is below middle class and helps us understand the issues that our character is facing.

Surprising Info

The author is describing them moving and goes into this childish wonder. The author describes the house to be very grand but when you think about the house that is described it is just like the house that I live in. The author then describes the house that they are actually moving into and it is heart breaking when you read it because it is exactly the opposite of you dream house. This curveball threw me for a loop while I was reading the House on Mango Street chapter.

Narrative techniques

Our author uses imagery to describe not only their dream house but also their new house on Mango Street. Our author uses words like crumbling, swollen, small, and ordinary. The author creates the scene inside your head by using these small but very powerful adjectives. The movement that is also described within this chapter is from abstract to concrete as she describes the dream house and then describes the real house that they are moving into.

Blog #2

Holden within chapter 15 is waiting on his date and while waiting he strikes up a conversation with two nuns who are near him. One of the nuns drops her straw charity basket and Holden picks it up. He decides to give ten bucks towards the charity even though they are not collecting. They ask him if he can afford it and the book then tells us after they finally accept, "The both of them kept thanking me so much it was embarrassing." This was a powerful moment because we see that Holden doesn't deem himself worthy to get gratitude for his actions.

Catcher in the Rye 9-10 Blog Option 1

The writer of this article is able to push forward the greater meaning behind the rattle inside that she had from her car was because she made it relatable and gave examples of very life changing event even though her event wasn’t as drastic as some of the ones she mentioned it still hits home. This article is to help people who do have that rattle that no one knows about and to give them courage to tell the people they care about.
This article can definitely apply to Holden because within the article it says, “I hope this moment of understanding and acknowledgement gives you some comfort. For just a moment, you’re not that crazy person,” the author of this article is allowing the comfort of the reader who is having that issue within their life as we see that Holden is having that exact issue that our author is describing. Holden in the book also says “I wasn’t too crazy about doing it, but I couldn’t think of anything else descriptive. Besides, I sort of liked writing about it.” We can see that he is opening himself up to us as the book progresses and he is also showing how much hurt that he has been through because of his brother’s death.

Catcher in the Rye meets Dead Poets Society assignment

Only, we didn’t have the meet. I left all of the foils and equipment and stuff on the --------- subway. It wasn’t all my fault. I had to keep getting up to look at this map, so we’d know where to get off. The team was so disappointed when they were walking by me when we got onto after figuring out that I left the dang equipment. They all walked to the backseats of the bus with their head hung low. It was an awful feeling knowing that you not only let yourself down but your teammates as well.
The only person that was furious was Marcus Detoniya. He had a leather jacket and greased back hair. He was always claiming that he had family in the Mob, and he was related to Al Capone. What a phony. As he walks by he just shakes his head. He stops and takes a breath and says, “Common Man.” He then slams himself into his seat making a thud. I could tell he was pissed as he showed it just as much as everyone else did.
I heard the Dunfee brothers, Jack and Trevor, fighting over what seat they sat in. Since they both look the same nobody could tell you where they sat either. One of them did sit with me. Jack was pulling Trevor out of the sweat while he was getting ripped from the seat Trevor yelled, “I’ll never let go Jack,” Despite his efforts Trevor came over and sat down next to me.

“What you got on you head?” asked Trevor. I replied very sarcastically, “A hat,” “Man you don’t have to be all pissed off when I asked.” As we talked about my rude attitude. “Hey check this out.” Tyler held up his phone and showed me the picture of the New York Subway system. I glared at him and he laughed. Not a mean haha I’m patronizing you for leaving the equipment laugh but more of a very friendly comforting laugh. I then start a smile considering that it was pretty funny. While we talked he asked more questions about my hat. I myself thought of it as an ordinary hat but Trevor always looked at it in a different way. Oh I forgot to mention what Trevor looked like. Trevor was a short version of Fabio. He even had the long golden flow that reached to the ground because of his height. Trevor also adde0d at the end of the ride, “Hey don’t hang your head. If it’s anyone’s fault it is the teams fault just as much as it is yours so don’t worry about them.”
